The Future of Primary Care

Bournemouth and Christchurch

In the future, emergency care will be provided at Royal Bournemouth Hospital and planned and specialist care will be provided at Poole Hospital. Urgent care will also be available at Poole Hospital.

In the future the majority of maternity and paediatric services will be available at Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Some antenatal and postnatal care and children’s therapies and outpatient services will be available at Poole.

A new mental health Community Front Room will be available in Wareham. A mental health Retreat will also be located in Bournemouth. Mental Health inpatient beds will still be available at St Ann’s in Poole.

In the community, there will be a community hub without beds at Christchurch Hospital and a community hub with beds on the Major Emergency Hospital site in Bournemouth. A community hub with beds will also be located nearby in Poole.

As with other areas across the county, work will continue to develop and improve the availability of services for people in their own homes, such as community nursing, therapy, and domiciliary care.

East Dorset

In the future, emergency care will be provided at Royal Bournemouth Hospital and planned and specialist care will be provided at Poole Hospital. Urgent care will also be available at Poole Hospital. Those living closer to Mid Dorset will be able to access emergency and planned care at Dorset County Hospital.

In the future the majority of maternity services will be available at Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Some antenatal and postnatal care and children’s therapies and outpatient services will be available at Poole. Those living closer to Mid Dorset will be able to access maternity and paediatric services at Dorset County Hospital. These services may be integrated across Dorset County Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital for the Dorset population in the future.

A new mental health Community Front Room will be available in Wareham. A mental health Retreat will also be located in Bournemouth. Mental Health inpatient beds will still be available at St Ann’s in Poole.

In the community, East Dorset will have a community hub with beds in Wimborne. Community Hubs without beds will also be located nearby in Wareham and Christchurch.

St Leonards Hospital would not be used as a community hub. The services based at St Leonards Hospital will be appropriately moved, and the site will be closed.

As with other areas across the county, work will continue to develop and improve the availability of services for people in their own homes, such as community nursing, therapy, and domiciliary care.

Mid Dorset

Emergency and planned care will continue to be accessed from Dorset County Hospital. Only the most specialist cases will be transferred to the Major Emergency Hospital or Major Planned Hospital. Those living closer to the East of the county will be able to access emergency care at Royal Bournemouth and urgent and planned care at Poole Hospital.

Maternity services will continue to be provided at Dorset County Hospital and in the future maternity and paediatric services may be integrated across Dorset County Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital for the Dorset population. Those living closer to the East of the county, the majority of maternity services will be available at Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Some antenatal and postnatal care and children’s therapies and outpatient services will be available at Poole.

New mental health Community Front Rooms will be available in Bridport and Wareham. A mental health Retreat will also be located in Dorchester. Mental Health inpatient beds will still be available at Forston Clinic near Dorchester and St Ann’s in Poole.

In the community, Mid Dorset will have a community hub without beds based at Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester. This will include the development of ‘step-up beds’ through re-organisation of Dorset County’s existing beds. In addition, people would have access to community hubs with beds in neighbouring Blandford, Sherborne, Bridport and Weymouth which will offer range of facilities (including outpatients and diagnostics).

As with other areas across the county, work will continue to develop and improve the availability of services for people in their own homes, such as community nursing, therapy, and domiciliary care.

North Dorset

Emergency and planned care will continue to be accessed from Dorset County Hospital. Only the most specialist cases will be transferred to the Major Emergency Hospital or Major Planned Hospital. Those living closer to the East of the county will be able to access emergency care at Royal Bournemouth and urgent and planned care at Poole Hospital.

Maternity services will continue to be provided at Dorset County Hospital and in the future maternity and paediatric services may be integrated across Dorset County Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital for the Dorset population. Those living closer to the East of the county, the majority of maternity services will be available at Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Some antenatal and postnatal care and children’s therapies and outpatient services will be available at Poole.

A new mental health Community Front Room will be available in Shaftesbury and a Retreat will be located in Dorchester and Bournemouth. Mental Health inpatient beds will still be available at Forston Clinic near Dorchester and St Ann’s in Poole.

In the community, North Dorset will have two community hubs with beds, one at Sherborne Hospital and one at Blandford Hospital (including outpatients and diagnostics). We will also maintain a community hub with beds in Shaftesbury, whilst working with the local community on a sustainable model for future services based on the health and care needs of this locality.

A future location for the community hub in Shaftesbury will need to be developed, in recognition that Shaftesbury Hospital has significant infrastructure limitations. This will reduce the potential to develop the range of outpatients, ambulatory care, diagnostics and other services on this site for the Shaftesbury, Gillingham and West Wiltshire population.

Poole

Those living closer to Mid Dorset will be able to access emergency and planned care at Dorset County Hospital.

In the future the majority of maternity and paediatric services will be available at Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Those living closer to Mid Dorset will be able to access maternity and paediatric services at Dorset County Hospital. Alderney Hospital will maintain its services until alternatives have been established and staff have been appropriately transferred. At this point the community beds at Alderney Hospital will close.

Purbeck

Emergency and planned care will continue to be accessed from Dorset County Hospital. Only the most specialist cases will be transferred to the Major Emergency Hospital or Major Planned Hospital. Those living closer to the East of the county will be able to access emergency care at Royal Bournemouth and urgent and planned care at Poole Hospital.

Maternity services will continue to be provided at Dorset County Hospital and in the future maternity and paediatric services may be integrated across Dorset County Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital for the Dorset population. Those living closer to the East of the county, the majority of maternity services will be available at Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Some antenatal and postnatal care and children’s therapies and outpatient services will be available at Poole.

West Dorset

Emergency and planned care will continue to be accessed from Dorset County Hospital. Only the most specialist cases will be transferred to the Major Emergency Hospital or Major Planned Hospital.

Maternity services will continue to be provided at Dorset County Hospital and in the future maternity and paediatric services may be integrated across Dorset County Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital for the Dorset population.

A new mental health Community Front Room will be available in Bridport and a Retreat will be located in Dorchester. Mental Health inpatient beds will still be available at Forston Clinic near Dorchester.

In the community, West Dorset will have a community hub with beds in Bridport with a wide range of facilities (including outpatients and diagnostics). There will also be access to a community hub with beds in neighbouring Sherborne and Weymouth.

As with other areas across the county, work will continue to develop and improve the availability of services for people in their own homes, such as community nursing, therapy, and domiciliary care.

Weymouth and Portland

Emergency and planned care will continue to be accessed from Dorset County Hospital. Only the most specialist cases will be transferred to the Major Emergency Hospital or Major Planned Hospital.

Maternity services will continue to be provided at Dorset County Hospital and in the future maternity and paediatric services may be integrated across Dorset County Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital for the Dorset population.

New mental health Community Front Rooms will be available in Bridport and Wareham. A mental health Retreat will also be located in Dorchester. Mental Health inpatient beds will still be available at Forston Clinic near Dorchester.

In the community, there will be a community hub with beds at Weymouth Community Hospital. However, services will be maintained at Westhaven Hospital (including beds) until the community hub with beds at Weymouth Hospital is established and staff and services have been appropriately transferred.

There will also be a community hub without beds in Portland. This may be at a different site to the existing hospital.

As with other areas across the county, work will continue to develop and improve the availability of services for people in their own homes, such as community nursing, therapy, and domiciliary care.
